Are You Still In Touch With Your WHY?
by Denver J. Hudson
You don’t just have a job, you have a calling. Who else gets to go to work everyday and make
such a meaningful difference in the lives of other people? Who else is in such a powerful place to touch the heart
and mind of those in your care, or those you are leading, or those you are serving?
Are you still in touch with the reason you got into your career?
It’s easy to lose focus, isn’t it? It’s easy to forget your “why” for doing what you do. And
yet your “why” – your heart-centered reason for being in your profession – is the inspirational core that
sustains you day after day regardless of the challenges you might face.
Last night, I was speaking to a coaching client, and we got into a discussion about how easy it is to fall into
frustration, anxiety, and despair when you are setting out to make a difference in the life of another. People are
just too unpredictable. They don’t always show up enthusiastically or appreciatively about the work that we do.
Sometimes they just don’t care, and that attitude can rub off, causing us to lose our focus and passion for the
work that we are doing. Worst case scenario: we stop caring, we stop leading, we stop making a difference.
To create “WOW!” demands that you stay grounded in the reason you got into the profession.
It demands that you remain intentional and committed to showing up powerfully as a leader who is
committed to creating excellence in service for others. In other words, the challenge that you face everyday
is to come from your heart-centered PASSION when serving others, rather than coming from the frustrations,
disappointments, and upsets associated with your work.
One of the most powerful ways you can do this is to take a moment before you begin your work day or before
you begin an encounter with someone you are serving, and declare who you will be for that person.
Here are some examples:
“Who I am for you is… a compassionate listener.”
“Who I am for you is… a passionate mentor.”
“Who I am for you is… a caring presence.”
“Who I am for you is… strength until you can find your own.”
“Who I am for you is… a commitment to making a difference in your life.”
Perhaps you will find as you engage in this simple – yet highly powerful practice – that you will find your
heart opening and returning to the reason you entered your profession.
Extraordinary leaders know who they are, what they stand for, and how they intend to make a
difference.
