Employee Health IS Organizational Health

by Denver J. Hudson

Employee health is central to a healthy organization. For example, consider how important health is to something as basic as daily communication among employees. When we consider communication, rarely do we consider the state of health of the two people communicating and how that is playing out in the communication. And yet health is a central factor in effective communication. Our state of health is either adding to the effectiveness of the communication or creating a great deal of interference.

Just consider how different a person with lower back pain, low energy, and emotional irritation communicates compared to someone who is energized, experiencing strength, and is effectively managing their emotions. I know that a great deal of organizations focus on health and wellness in order to reduce insurance costs, and that is certainly a worthy and important goal. And we must also recognize that there are other costs involved, such as weak or failed communications. How much money is your organization losing due to weak and unhealthy communication that originates in unhealthy employees?

Since we get things done through communicating with one another, the health of those communications is critical to our individual and organizational success. And what are the essential, fundamental components that make up those communications? One's body and physical energy. One's language, distinctions, and mental focus. One's emotions and moods and the impact they have on the communication. And the larger purpose and context within which the communication is occurring. And ALL of these fundamental factors are impacted by our state of health in any given moment.

Given the importance of our health and it's direct connection to the health of our organization, we must constantly be mindful of what actions we are taking - and can yet take - to insure that each of us individually, and all of us collectively, are committed to creating and maintaining our health. And that is a primary focus of The WOW! Movement: to teach and support others in mastering the fundamentals to optimal health, so they can continue to provide excellence in leadership and service day after day - and make a difference in the world!
