Your Heart, The Power of Touch, and Excellent Customer Service
by Denver J. Hudson
One of the things I love about the word “WOW!” is that it’s loaded with energy! In fact, when we commit to
creating Experiences of WOW! (excellent customer service), we are making a commitment to add to the energy
and vitality of those we serve. And that helps them to grow, heal, learn, and live new possibilities!
One of the easiest ways we can create WOW! for another is through the simple act of touching: a handshake,
pat on the back, high five, a touch on the hand or arm. All of these simple acts of touching (when done
appropriately - of course) are loaded with the possibility to enrich the lives of others and create a more
caring and connected culture.
Research (HeartMath) has revealed that when we touch someone (or even stand close to them!), the electrical
energy from our heart is transmitted to the person’s brain, and vice versa. In other words, your cardiac electrical
signal – which you are “broadcasting” every moment of everyday – is literally impacting the heart and brain of
everyone you encounter during the day! (Who would have thought that your cardiac electrical signal was
such a vital component of your leadership and customer service!?)
You may want to read that last paragraph again! Let it soak in a bit. You see, our emotional state is
literally broadcasting from our bodies and is being picked up by those around us! For example, when you touch (or
stand close to) another person while experiencing a feeling of care (a feeling of WOW!), you are
actually sending out a signal from your body that is promoting the health and well-being of that person. If –
on the other hand – you are experiencing emotions or moods such as anger, resentment, worry, or anxiety (feelings
of “woe”), then you are sending out signals that are potentially harmful to the person you are touching or standing
close to.
This truth – verified by research – is one of the many reasons why I’m excited about bringing The
WOW! Movement to more and more professionals. When we make a commitment to living the “Way of
WOW!”, we are making a commitment to being and becoming a person who is intentional and capable
of generating and living in the moods and emotions of joy, care, compassion, wonder, appreciation, and gratitude –
the very emotions and moods that allow us to emanate the electrical energy that promotes health and well-being to
those we serve!
